When getting ready for a K-pop concert, most people consider a list of things they should bring with them, but what about things you should leave at home? The following are a list of items that you might consider taking or wearing to a concert that I think you should reconsider.
1. A very large or obnoxious poster or sign
I know we all want to be noticed and show our love and support for our idols but for the most part I think signs are a bad idea. Especially if you aren't near the stage, the chances of it being readable are slim to none and you really aren't going to feel like holding it the whole time once you get there. Space WILL be limited and there may not be a good spot to stash it or put it down during the concert. If you are insistent on bringing a sign, just please be mindful of those around you and don't hold it so that you are blocking someone else's view.
2. Drugs or Alcohol
This should really go without saying, but please don't try to sneak drugs or your own alcohol into the venue. I've witnessed this being attempted at other (not K-pop) concerts and seen it result in fans being banned from entering, or getting kicked out halfway through the show because they were caught by security. Just DON'T do it. Not only could it result in ruining your own night and wasting your own time and money, but it could cause a major disruption for other fans and ruin their enjoyment of the show as well.
3. Things to throw onstage
I've seen fans try to throw larger items like stuffed animals and flowers onstage and overall, I don't think it's a great idea. Of course, sometimes it works out ok, but I have seen videos of artists being hit by, or almost tripping over, items thrown on stage while they are performing. Another thing to keep in mind is that many idols are so overloaded by fans trying to give them gifts on a daily basis that they've decided not to accept any at all. I think if you're close enough to the stage to throw or pass a note up on there, that may be the best option if you want to give them something. Idols always enjoy reading heartfelt messages from fans.
4. Uncomfortable shoes, clothing or accessories.
I know we all want to look our best but trust me when I say your concert experience will be much more fun and enjoyable if you wear something comfortable. That doesn't mean you can't wear something fashionable, just try to choose items with comfortable, not scratchy materials and accessories that won't hinder you or get in the way. Make sure you wear a pair of shoes you know you can handle standing in all day. Based on my own experience, comfortable shoes are the most important part of your outfit. You might be able to ignore a slightly too tight waistband or scratchy lace on them hem of your sleeves, but if your shoes hurt your feet, they are going to be killing you before the show even starts and it's going to distract you from being fully able to enjoy the concert.
5. Clothing that is not weather appropriate
Not only should you make sure your clothing and shoes are something that are comfortable enough to wear all day, but they also need to be weather appropriate. It's important to arrive early to K-pop concerts and whether it's summer or winter, rainy or sunny, you WILL be standing OUTSIDE (for potentially hours). Even the walk from wherever you're parked or get dropped off could be a large distance so keep that in mind. Bring an umbrella or poncho if the forecast shows a chance of rain. Don't choose to wear a tank top and miniskirt without a jacket if it's freezing outside. Similarly, heavy black jeans or tight leather clothing you will regret wearing if it's hot outside.
6. Anything expensive.
While I sincerely hope none of us have to worry about anything getting stolen during a K-pop concert, the risk of losing or damaging an item is pretty high. I don't recommend wearing expensive (or highly sentimental) jewelry or bringing anything you aren't willing to risk getting damaged or lost. During a Blackpink concert, my daughter had beer spilled all over her purse. It was completely soaked, and the crowd was so large she wasn't even sure when it happened or who did it. She ended up just throwing it out after that night. Imagine if that had been an expensive designer bag. She would have been devastated!
7. Large or heavy backpacks or bags
Most venues won't even allow them, but if your venue does allow larger backpacks or bags, please avoid packing too many "just in case" items. Especially if your tickets are general admission, you're not going to want to hold something large or heavy for that long. Also, wearing an oversized backpack can make you unsteady and hinder others in a crowd where everyone is packed and pushing against each other. Even if you have a seat, the space in front of you, or underneath your seat is very tight, and you may not have room to set a large bag down.
In summary, always check out the venue's specific rules on what is and is not allowed. This should be obvious, but firearms or weapons of any kind will not be allowed. Also, heavy chains on clothing, steel toed boots, and photography equipment are items that are typically not allowed at concert venues either.
